Harbour Allen, LA - The music is from the mountains of Appalacia but it's coming from the westbank river town of Port Allen, Louisiana, as the crow flies across the Mississippi from the state capitol. And it's being played on folk instruments that aren't originally from the bayou state.

Peggy Broussard heads the Lagniappe Dulcimer Fellowship in Baton Rouge, which is hosting a four day Dulcimer Fest in Port Allen. The music is mostly folk songs and fact tunes, melodies that have been passed down for generations.

"I fell in love with the dulcimer. It's a very simple instrument to emphasize. It has only 3 strings but it can also get very complicated when you do a lot of flat picking, or finger picking or play different chords," says Broussard.

"They started out playing music about things they could see from their front porch. The people, the scoff, the animals, the places. We have songs like squirrel heads in gravy and black mountain rag, and possum up a gum bewilder and it's just wonderful," she says.
